One Dragon at a Time

Let me tell you about dragons.
Not the fantasy dragons of myths and fairy tales, but the dragons we face within ourselves.
Dragons have appeared in stories across countless cultures throughout human history. Again and again, we find the same pattern: a hero ventures into the unknown, confronts a dragon, survives the battle, and returns with a treasure. The gold. The jewels. The wisdom. The boon that benefits not only the hero but the entire village.
We love these stories because they speak to something timeless within us.
But what if our inner dragons aren’t creatures at all?
What if they’re moments?
Moments we encounter as we move through the difficult chapters of our lives.
Some dragons last a minute.
Some last five minutes.
Some last thirty minutes.
Some linger for hours, days, weeks, or even longer.
What if these dragons have no face because they live within the darkness of our own inner caves…the places where our deepest fears, wounds, and limitations reside?
The fears placed there by painful experiences.
The limitations born from old circumstances.
The beliefs we’ve carried for so long that we’ve forgotten to question them.
These hidden places often become the breeding grounds for the challenges we face every day. The more we avoid entering the cave, the larger the dragon seems to grow. Not because it is becoming stronger, but because our fear continues to feed it.
Many of us imagine courage as something dramatic.
We picture a defining moment. A single battle. One heroic act that changes everything.
But life rarely works that way.
What if becoming the hero isn’t about conquering one great, monumental dragon?
What if it happens through hundreds, or even thousands, of smaller acts of courage?
One brave moment at a time.
Because courage doesn’t appear overnight.
Just as muscles are not built in a day, neither is bravery.
Strength develops through repetition…
…The athlete becomes stronger one workout at a time.
…The musician becomes skilled through countless hours of practice.
…The writer develops their voice one page at a time.
Perhaps courage grows in exactly the same way.
Perhaps the warrior within us is revealed through the accumulation of many small victories. Through countless moments where we choose growth over comfort, truth over avoidance, and presence over escape.
Maybe facing a dragon looks like resisting the urge to have a drink.
Maybe it’s sitting with a cigarette craving for five more minutes.
Maybe it’s choosing not to send the angry text.
Maybe it’s allowing yourself to feel grief instead of distracting yourself from it.
Maybe it’s admitting you were wrong.
Maybe it’s setting a boundary that you’ve been afraid to set.
Maybe it’s telling someone you love them without needing anything in return.
Maybe it’s moving through the uncomfortable integration that follows a profound healing experience.
Maybe it’s allowing your body the rest it needs after an intense workout despite the voice insisting that you should keep pushing.
Maybe it’s simply getting out of bed on a day when life feels impossibly heavy.
From the outside, these moments may appear insignificant.
To the person living them, they can feel like the hardest battle in the world.
And yet every one of them matters.
Every. Single. One.
Because each small act of courage becomes another piece of the treasure we reclaim from the cave.
Every time we stay present with discomfort instead of running from it, we recover something valuable.
A little self-trust.
A little strength.
A little wisdom.
A little freedom.
A little more of ourselves.
The treasure was never just gold.
The treasure is who we become through the process.
Over time, these moments accumulate.
They shape us.
Strengthen us.
Reveal us.
And one day, often without realizing it, we look back and see that we have become someone different than the person who first entered the cave.
Not because of one extraordinary battle.
But because of hundreds of ordinary moments when we chose courage instead of fear.
The hero was never created in a single epic confrontation.
The hero was forged through a lifetime of facing dragons.
One dragon.
One moment.
One courageous choice at a time.
